Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Steele, 61,
of Tucson, Ariz., died Sunday following a series of illnesses.
A 1960 graduate of Knightstown High School and 1965 graduate of
Butler University, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She
was a welfare worker in Indianapolis and then a Vista volunteer,
serving Native Americans in Winnebago, Neb. Working for the
Methodist Church, she served Native Americans in North Carolina
and Oklahoma and
survivors of the Buffalo Creek, W.Va., flood disaster. In 1979,
she received a master’s degree in counseling from Arizona State
University. She worked with teenagers at New Directions for
Young Women, which became the Family Counseling Agency. July 1,
2003, marked her 20th anniversary. She was certified as a
professional counselor by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health
and the National Professional Counselors Commission. She was a
member of the American Counseling Association, the Arizona
Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association,
the American Personnel and Guidance Associations and the
National Association of Women Deans, Administrators and
Counselors. Her volunteer activities included counseling for the
Tucson AIDS Project, participating the HIV/AIDS Therapists
Networking Group and volunteering at the teaching hospital
associated with the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine.
She was born Oct. 27, 1942, in Indianapolis, a daughter of
Elizabeth Mai Kalleen Steele and Richard Monticue Steele.
She is survived by her mother of Knightstown; a brother, David
(wife: Diane) of Knightstown; niece and nephew, Kalleen, USAF
and Drew, St. Louis, Mo.; and an aunt, Betty Kalleen of Fishers;
cousins, Julie Bubul of Orcle, Ariz., Rick Steele of
Springfield, Va., Jenny Brown of Oak Harbor, Wash., Steve Bubul
of St. Paul, Minn., Bob Russell of Geneva, Ill., Jim Russell of
Roswell, Ga., Chip Kalleen of Indianapolis, Cheryl Beerbower of
Fishers, Bob Wilcox of Sherman Oak, Ca., and their spouses and
children; friends, Sue and Laura Moran of Tucson, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her father; aunts and uncles, Mary
Isabel Steele and Jake Bubul, Theodore and Jane Preston Steele,
Nancy Kalleen and Robert Russell, Agnes Kalleen and Jacob Wilcox
and James L. Kalleen.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Todd Funeral Home Butcher
Chapel in Knightstown. Friends may call 9 a.m. until the time of
service Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside services and
burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.
